With October 31st right around the corner, we’ll bet your kids already have an idea of who they want to dress up as for Halloween, if they don’t have their costume already! The team at Sports Specialist Rehab Centre thought to share our top three tips for a safe trick-or-treating, avoiding the potential for injury on the big night:
Wear Proper Shoes
We know, we know – they don’t always perfectly match the costume, but if you and your kids will be spending a few hours walking around the neighbourhood in search of sweet, delicious, delights, do it in the most comfortable way possible! A pair of sturdy, comfortable shoes with proper support will let you slip shoes off at the end of the night with gentle sigh and make the next morning far more comfortable as well
Use The Right Candy Tote
Remember the plastic Jack-0-Lantern we used as kids? Great memory, but don’t pass this one along to your kids. Typically that style of carrier has one plastic/wire handle that can be quite uncomfortable in the palm of your hand. Alternatively, consider taking the environmentally-friendly & reusable route, opting for a cloth-style bag that can carried on the shoulder and switched over to the alternate shoulder every block or so to ensure evenly using both sides of the body. Bonus points if the straps are padded!
Take a Second Just-in-Case Tote
SCORE! If your neighbourhood has lots of loot for little ones, that can lead to a heavier bag, which may be too much for growing (though enthusiastic!) kids. To be safe, bring a second bag to distribute candy into and assist your trick-or-treaters by carrying their heavy candy load for them. Who knows, maybe they’ll even share their candy with you! 😉
